Greetings from Alaska everyone, I hope you are enjoying the nice Spring weather; it got up to 55 here the other day!! Wow lots to talk about today. I will start with our own KOP making the newspaper (The Boston Globe), for his participation in the MASS CANN organized Global Marijuana March held in Boston Mass. May 5th!!
Congratulations to KOP, MASS CANN and KOP Productions for the slide show on the site. Just click where it says slide show from Marijuana March on the home page.
I have to share some news that just broke today as I write this column, out of Dearborn, Michigan. I understand, as do you, that we are all human; Governors, Senators, Law enforcement, Judges, and Ministers. What I'm getting at is that we should not be too surprised when we hear stories like this one. "Police officer, keeps seized marijuana.” He and his wife made edible brownies out of it, but when they ate them, they felt really strange, so weird that he called 911 and said he thought he was dying, as did his wife. He admitted to what he had done, and said he thought it might be laced with something so that’s why he called 911. He has been a police officer for over 15 years! As of this column they haven’t decided whether or not to prosecute him. This is my: "DUMB COP STORY OF THE WEEK!!"
Thank you California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger: For not pardoning Ms. Paris Hilton from her DUI jail time. You drink you drive, you pay the man as everyone does! I’m positive even she, knew that! But thought her fame and family jewels would cut the cake with the Governor. "Wrong!"
Doctors getting paid millions to push Anemia Drugs, and Psychiatric Drugs:
FDA, Thursday May 10th states: "Two of the worlds largest Drug companies are paying doctors millions to push their Anemia drugs, which regulators say now may be unsafe!"
Also a Psychiatric drug, Risperdal, was given to patients before it had been approved. When given to young people, it ended a twelve-year-old girl’s young life. The reason; it had never been approved for children! The Doctor was getting paid an abundant amount of money to sell so much of it. This just proves that some of the Doctors are only in it for the money; they don’t care about young lives, only about their BMW’s! The Government seems to like money, and making money. They are also getting paid for allowing this to go on. While innocent people get hurt.
Maybe if the government could decide together to legalize marijuana in all states, for medicinal use, they could make money off the farming, among other things. Marijuana could possibly be America’s largest cash crop, exceeding corn by millions!!! Helping our failing economy, and putting food into the mouths of homeless and neglected children, among a ton of other things.
The legalization and taxation of medicinal marijuana could do for them, not to mention what it would do to help the poor and elderly patients, in the states where there are no laws.
I think New Mexico was last because they have a large population of retirees like Nevada, Arizona, and California, these are the states that are legal already. I feel real bad for Florida, because of the same reason, no laws for medicinal marijuana at all! The Ohio governor just turned a bill down that would have at least discussed the possibility of it.
Big week For Medical marijuana reform in Minnesota, Rhode Island and Vermont: FROM MPP:
Legislatures pass medical marijuana bills. Because of MPP’s legislative efforts it has been a real action packed week. Rhode Island’s Senate just voted 28 to 5 to make Rhode Island’s Medical Marijuana law permanent. This vote follows a 50 to 12 vote on the bill in the Rhode Island House of Representatives, on the 8th.
Also on the 8th the Vermont House of Representatives gave final approval to the bill to improve Vermont’s existing medical marijuana law. MPP has been coordinating the lobbying campaign for the bill, which would qualify patients suffering from conditions that cause nausea, wasting, chronic pain, or seizures; increase the number of plants that a qualifying patient may possess: and reduce the programs registration fee from $100 to $50.

Also this week, the Minnesota Senate twice voted in favor of MPP’s medical marijuana bill, 35 to 20 on the 8th of May, and 33 to 31 on Tuesday. Marking the first time that either chamber of the Minnesota Legislature has passed medical marijuana legislation. Plus MPP’s medical marijuana bill in New York passed an assembly committee with a vote of 15 to 4 on April 14th. Local news coverage of the Illinois bill has generated lots of positive local news coverage. St Paul, Minnesota’s bill to protect seriously ill patients from arrest for using medical marijuana with a doctor’s recommendation is ready for a full house vote, having cleared the Ways and Means Committee 2 days ago in a 14 to 9 vote.
“I hope the house follows the Senate’s lead and, for the sake of Minnesota’s seriously ill patients, passes this compassionate bill quickly,” said Representative Tom Huntley (DFL-Duluth). This final committee vote brings Minnesota yet another step closer to becoming the 13th state with an effective medical marijuana law. In case you don’t remember the 12 states that do have a effective medical marijuana program are as follows: New Mexico, California, Nevada, Maine, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Hawaii, Alaska, Montana, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Here in Alaska we don’t have depots or outlets. We are a small population comparatively so we only have about 500 out of our whole state registered with medical marijuana cards. Alaskans have very few doctors that will write a prescription for it. Most Doctors recommend the marinol pills, over the inhaled marijuana.
Alaska is a mostly non-smoking state, especially when it comes to tobacco, which is taxed higher here than most States. In Alaska $6.50 a pack! Up from $2.99 only a few years ago.
We're are all feeling the gas pinch and I’d love to think you are participating in the “Don’t pump gas on May 15th Petition! Last time 2 million people didn’t pump gas in 1997 to protest above $2.00 a gallon gas; prices were lowered by an average of 30 cents in the following days. Because, after you do the math, you realize the billions of dollars of loss the oil companies experienced that day. So if they reacted to our actions, lets do it again! Pass it around to your friends. Don’t pump gas on May 15th.
